![]() ![]() Conquest had an interesting premise that it ultimately disappointed with. Birthright was a fairly standard FE plot of one nation fighting off its aggressor neighbor with the added drama of the main character knowing a lot of people on the other side. I suppose another way to look at it is they had too many ideas and not enough time to flesh them all out and playtest them. Then Revelation was full of gimmicky chapters.Īs I said in the Revelation post, it feels weird to say they ran out of ideas when they had so many different gimmicks but that’s what it felt like. However, it also had some very bad maps like that damn fox chapter. Conquest had some very good maps including ones that seemed straightforward but were shaken up by interesting enemy formations and abilities. Birthright had some good though sometimes unremarkable maps. Overall, these new and tweaked mechanics were the high point of Fates. I also think the Fates skills were an improvement over Awakening’s, especially the personal skills. I didn’t dive into reclassing really at all but I like that they kept around branching promotions. Having enemies able to use the same system was also great. Having it split into offense and defense and all the positional choices it presented was great. The Pair Up mechanic was a vast improvement over Awakening. ![]() But Fates was pretty good on this front with my main complaint being that weapons that are supposed to be late game weapons getting penalized too much. I’m not sure FE will ever completely nail down weapons so long as they’re determined to keep you using weaker weapons using trade-offs I’m sure there will always be something annoying. I loved the debuffs and I liked how weapons were handled. I’ve gushed quite a bit about a lot of the new mechanics. Did they succeed? Or was it just a money grab? They tried something new and different with this one. With me now having finished all of FE Fates I decided to take a step back and summarize my thoughts on the entry. ![]()
